Amp Energy India Commissions 13.5 MW Solar Open Access Project Supplying Power in Maharashtra

Amp Energy India, one of India’s leading renewable energy companies, recently commissioned a 13.5 MW solar power project for Orient Cement, one of India’s fastest growing and leading cement manufacturers. This project will provide solar power to Orient Cement’s Maharashtra manufacturing facility from Amp’s open access facility in Gourgaon village, Osmanabad District.

Orient Cement has signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Amp Energy India for the procurement of solar power. Orient Cement will benefit from a reduction in overall energy costs as well as a reduction in their carbon footprint as a result of this project. Orient Cement will meet half of its annual energy needs and significantly reduce its energy bills as a result of this collaboration. The project will also assist Orient Cement in reducing approximately 15,595 Metric tons of CO2 per annum.

With its diverse portfolio of projects, Amp Energy India has already developed large open access projects, including the largest Solar Open Access Project in Maharashtra (30 MW), the first captive solar open access project in Uttar Pradesh (42 MW), and its third Open Access project in Karnataka (30 MW).

Stressing that in India, the infrastructure sector is the backbone upon which the economy grows, Pinaki Bhattacharyya, MD and CEO, Amp Energy India, said, “In this sector, cement companies like Orient Cement have been at the forefront establishing best practices in manufacturing and conserving the environment. This partnership will provide the right impetus for other cement companies to transition towards 100% renewable energy for reducing their energy costs and meeting their sustainability targets. We would like to extend our gratitude to the team at Orient Cement for cooperating with us, especially in these tough times and help us deliver the project within the timelines.”

Against this backdrop, Soumitro Bhattacharyya, Chief Financial Officer, Orient Cement, commented, “Switching to solar and other renewable sources of energy for our manufacturing plants was planned to ensure we progressively reduce our carbon footprint in line with our sustainability goals. Renewable power, of which solar remains a key pillar, will continue to grow within our energy mix as we expand capacity in the years ahead. We are happy to collaborate with Amp on this project and look forward to a continued association.”
