Hexagon Collaborates with CMTI for Smart Manufacturing

Stockholm, Sweden and Bengaluru, India – Hexagon AB has partnered with India’s Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI) to establish a Smart Manufacturing Development and Demonstration Cell (SMDDC), an Industry 4.0 Centre of Excellence and Experience Centre, at the CMTI’s Bengaluru headquarters. Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division will support the SMDDC’s implementation and operations through this engagement by providing products, services, and know-how.

Under the aegis of the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises’ Smart Advanced Manufacturing and Rapid Transformation Hub (SAMARTH) Udyog initiative, this move supports the ‘Make in India’ vision. The SMDDC is envisioned as a Common Engineering Facility Centre to propagate and support the rapidly growing Indian manufacturing industry’s adoption of Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing practices.

Hexagon will collaborate with CMTI to create a Smart Factory Demonstrator with a Digital Twin for Small & Medium Businesses, with examples of CNC machining, sheet metal production, and additive manufacturing. The Smart Factory Demonstrator, which uses Industry 4.0 / Smart Factory platforms, showcases the most recent manufacturing technologies for these industries. The Demonstrator will focus on modular and configurable solution architectures that will allow smaller businesses to experiment and scale with their needs. It includes a robust research and training platform that makes use of some of CMTI’s existing manufacturing infrastructure.

MSC Software, a fully owned subsidiary of Hexagon, signed a similar agreement with the government-supported IIT Delhi-AIA Foundation for Smart Manufacturing (FSM) in September 2019 to encourage the adoption of smart manufacturing in India’s Small-to-Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

Hexagon’s digital twin capabilities assist companies in digitally transforming manufacturing processes by seamlessly connecting data from throughout the process and bringing the real and CAE worlds together to drive continuous improvement. The Manufacturing Intelligence Division of Hexagon provides solutions that use data from design and engineering, production, and metrology to make manufacturing smarter.

Citing it a timely initiative to enable the Indian industry, particularly MSMEs, to experience and adopt Industry 4.0 technologies to improve their quality, productivity, and efficiency in a cost-effective manner, Dr Nagahanumaiah, Director, CMTI, asserted, “We are delighted to associate ourselves with Hexagon as our vision to build a smart manufacturing facility and demo centre under the SAMARTH Udyog initiative is coming to fruition. We would like to invite Indian design and manufacturing organizations to come and experience smart manufacturing and how it could help them with their specific requirements.”

Expecting the project to go a long way toward promoting indigenous research and developing cost-effective, state-of-the-art technology through Industry 4.0 as well as building the required expertise for smart manufacturing in India, Sridhar Dharmarajan, Executive Vice President and Managing Director, Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence, India, added, “We are proud to collaborate and are fully committed to this initiative with CMTI to drive the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies.”
