India’s National Robotics Mission: Paving the Way to Global Robotics Leadership

New Delhi, India – India’s journey in robotics is gaining momentum, with a significant step toward becoming a global ‘Robotics Hub’. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology of India, unveiled the draft national strategy on robotics for public consultation.

This policy not only promises opportunities for the manufacturing sector and Industry 4.0 but also emphasizes the crucial role of cyber-physical systems (CPS). The minister has invited input from startups, manufacturing companies, and those connected to Industry 4.0 through the MyGov platform by October 31, extending the opportunity for collective contribution. The ultimate goal is to align with India’s strategic AI planning and foster collaboration within the robotics and AI ecosystem to ensure the success of this policy.

The draft national strategy on robotics acknowledges the profound impact of AI on cyber-physical systems, particularly in the realm of robotics, where AI facilitates the interaction between the virtual and physical worlds. This understanding is shared globally, both in the public and private sectors, recognizing the significance of robotic automation in shaping future societal, economic, and technological outcomes.

To position India as a global leader in robotics, the strategy identifies four strategically vital sectors: manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and national security. The blueprint for India’s ascent in robotics involves the establishment of the ‘National Robotics Mission’. This mission will be executed through the Robotics Innovation Unit (RIU), operating as an institutional framework under IndiaAI—the national AI portal of India. The RIU is designed as a responsive agency to support the dynamic robotics startup, research, and innovation ecosystem in India.
