Mumbai, India - Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T), a US$ 30 billion Indian multinational with operations in engineering, procurement, construction projects, and hi-tech manufacturing, has received a supply order from the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) of the Indian Army for the overhaul, upgrade, and obsolescence management of the indigenous Pinaka Multi-Rocket Launcher Systems.
This initiative between a domestic private original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and the Indian Army is focused on the long-term sustenance of frontline artillery systems. The partnership is aimed at improving product lifecycle support for Made-in-India in-service artillery systems.
The programme will work towards improving the long-term operational availability and modernization of Pinaka regiments currently in service with the Indian Army. The effort is designed to manage outdated components, upgrade critical sub-systems, and provide sustained technical support to Army Base Workshops (ABWs).
As part of the programme, 510 Army Base Workshop (ABW) of the Corps of EME will carry out the overhaul and upgrade of critical electronics and system elements. The workshop will leverage its extensive domain knowledge, while L&T will supply essential spare parts and support the modernization of sub-systems. This approach is intended to move away from conventional maintenance practices toward a structured, lifecycle-based sustenance and upgrade framework.
In the initial phase, L&T and 510 ABW will jointly conduct a pilot overhaul of a Pinaka Launcher and a Battery Command Post. Following the successful completion of the pilot phase, subsequent systems will be overhauled by 510 ABW. L&T will continue to provide critical spares, technical support and quality oversight throughout the process.
This model is expected to serve as a potential template for similar upgrade and sustainment programs across other defence systems. The programme aligns with India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision by emphasizing indigenous design, manufacturing, and systems integration capabilities. It is expected to contribute to a more self-reliant and future-ready defence ecosystem.
L&T has been a long-standing development partner to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Army in the design and supply of Pinaka artillery systems. This latest partnership represents a shift toward deeper industry-Indian army collaboration in sustaining critical defence systems.
