HONING LOCAL CAPABILITY FOR 25 YEARS

Over the past 25 years, TaeguTec India has transitioned from a tungsten powder processing company into a highly specialized cutting tool brand. The company’s journey has been shaped by its Bengaluru manufacturing facility, application-focused technical support, local engineering capabilities, and efforts to develop specialized talent.

A defining early milestone for TaeguTec India was the inauguration of its state-of-the-art Bengaluru facility in 2001, helping the company become one of the industry’s top three players within five years. “Technologically, transitioning from a tungsten powder processing company into a highly specialized cutting tool brand was a pivotal shift,” says L Krishnan, Managing Director, TaeguTec India Pvt Ltd.

This evolution, coupled with the establishment of the company’s dedicated Indian R&D center in 2003, enabled it to consistently launch generational technology campaigns and engineer tailored solutions for local complexities. “Our foundational ambition was to build a world-class manufacturing organization in India capable of competing globally,” explains Krishnan.

Rethinking Tooling Through Total Cost of Ownership

Customer expectations across core sectors such as automotive, aerospace, and energy have also evolved. According to Krishnan, the most profound evolution is the industry’s shift from ‘price-sensitivity to risk-mitigation’.

“Previously, procurement focused on the initial acquisition cost. Today, manufacturers evaluate tooling based entirely on the total cost of ownership and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE),” he elaborates. “While cutting tools represent merely 1 to 1.5 percent of component costs, an unreliable tool causes heavy financial losses through machine downtime.”

This has bolstered customers’ demand for supply chain predictability and unwavering process reliability. TaeguTec India adapted by deploying a rigorous ‘Material × Operation’ matrix, ensuring that its technical support engineers address core metallurgical challenges directly at the spindle.

Taking Expertise to the Shop Floor

The company’s approach extends beyond advanced metal cutting tools to working with manufacturers on specific machining requirements. “True productivity requires optimizing the entire manufacturing ecosystem,” states Krishnan. “Our sales and application teams across India partner with customers right from the component design stage, delivering engineered, turnkey setups that de-risk the manufacturing process before the spindle even turns.”

By analyzing specific operations alongside workpiece materials, the company engineers bespoke solutions that maximize output without sacrificing stability. Furthermore, TaeguTec India actively recommends right-sizing cutting tools, such as deploying its compact Rhino geometries, which provide exceptional rigidity while eliminating the massive waste of oversized carbide, fundamentally lowering the total cost per component.

Growing the People Behind Technology

Employee development has remained another focus through the company’s 25-year journey. “We firmly believe that an organization succeeds only when its people succeed,” states Krishnan. “In this highly specialized domain, talent retention and development are critical. Over the last two decades, we have continuously nurtured the next generation of innovators through robust Graduate and Diploma Engineer Trainee (GET/DET) programs and structured paid internships.”

This ensures a steady pipeline of highly skilled professionals. Beyond professional upskilling, TaeguTec India also actively invests in creating a workplace culture of belonging, celebration, and care. “By valuing our people as much as performance, we foster a loyal, technically astute workforce capable of leading the industry forward,” he adds.

Supporting Global-Ready Manufacturing

As India transitions into a sophisticated global manufacturing hub, domestic companies are rapidly expanding into high-value supply chains across the different sectors. “To compete globally, Indian manufacturers cannot rely on fragile, commoditized supply chains; they require absolute process stability, zero defects, and high predictability,” emphasizes TaeguTec India MD.

TaeguTec India acts as a strategic enabler for this transition. “Leveraging our localized Bengaluru manufacturing footprint and dedicated Indian R&D capabilities, we provide world-class standard and custom-engineered tooling,” he further states.

Towards Smarter and Circular Tooling

Looking ahead, TaeguTec India identifies digital enablement, localized innovation, and circularity as priority areas for its next phase of growth. The company plans to continue developing high-feed, application-specific tooling for emerging difficult-to-machine alloys.

Crucially, sustainability is also expected to anchor the company’s strategy. As Krishnan points out, “Building on our achievement of sourcing 98 percent of our energy from renewable sources and maintaining zero liquid discharge, we are expanding our vertical integration into tungsten recycling to ensure a secure, circular supply chain.”
