Pune, India – TKIL Industries Pvt Ltd (formerly thyssenkrupp Industries India), a leading player in industrial engineering and manufacturing, has signed an exclusive strategic agreement with Germany’s HOPPECKE Batterien GmbH & Co in the field of battery systems for the rail sector in India. This collaboration is aimed at developing and delivering innovative and sustainable energy storage solutions for India’s growing rail transportation sector.
Under the agreement, TKIL Industries and HOPPECKE will jointly design, produce, and integrate advanced battery systems across diverse rail applications, including metros, regional trains, and locomotives. This also marks a significant milestone, with TKIL Industries securing its first order under this collaboration. The first joint project is slated for rollout in 2025.
With India expected to double its electric locomotive capacity by 2030, this collaboration comes at a pivotal time. The number of metro-operational cities in India is projected to increase from 23 in FY25 to 31 in FY30, creating a demand for over 20,000 electric locomotives. Additionally, around 900 km of metro rail projects are underway, backed by an estimated investment of INR 600 crore, underscoring the massive opportunity in the rail battery ecosystem.
To this ambitious project, TKIL Industries will bring its expertise in engineering, manufacturing, and project management, while HOPPECKE will contribute its decades of experience in developing and producing industrial energy storage solutions. In the long term, this collaboration is expected to deepen further, including the development of localized service infrastructure across India.
Commenting on the milestone, Vivek Bhatia, Managing Director and CEO, TKIL Industries, said, “We are honored to partner with HOPPECKE, marking a strategic milestone in our journey to support India’s transition to sustainable rail transport. HOPPECKE brings decades of technological expertise in energy storage solutions, while TKIL Industries specializes in delivering large-scale infrastructure across India. Together, we aim to play a pivotal role in accelerating the electrification of the Indian rail market—combining innovation, execution capability, and a shared vision for a greener future.”
Dr Marc Zoellner, CEO, HOPPECKE Batterien GmbH & Co said, “India is a strategically important growth market for sustainable mobility solutions. This alliance with a respected partner like TKIL Industries marks a significant step forward in delivering meaningful value to India’s railway sector through our advanced battery systems.”
