Ace Designers Patents Automated Chuck Changer for VTLs

Bengaluru, India – Ace Designers Ltd has been granted Indian Patent No. 583733 for its innovative development titled ‘An Automated Chuck Changing Mechanism’. This breakthrough technology has been successfully integrated into its upcoming VTL 30 LM ACC (Automated Chuck Changer)—a next-generation Vertical CNC Turning Centre designed to redefine productivity in large-part machining.

The VTL 30 LM ACC is engineered to handle multiple chuck sizes (up to 400 mm) and accommodates different chuck makes, making it highly suitable for flexible, general-purpose machining environments where frequent changeovers are required.

Addressing a Critical Bottleneck in VTL Operations

In conventional Vertical Turning Lathes (VTLs), part loading and unloading—typically carried out using overhead cranes—can take between 3 to 5 minutes per cycle, often contributing to nearly 50 percent of the total cycle time. This non-cutting time has long been a major constraint on machine productivity and utilization.

Ace Designers’ patented automated chuck changing mechanism directly addresses this challenge by reducing the chuck and part changeover time to approximately 30 seconds, representing a step-change improvement in operational efficiency.

Parallel Operations for Continuous Machining

A key highlight of this innovation is its ability to enable simultaneous operations. While machining is in progress on one chuck within the machine enclosure, part loading and unloading can be performed on another chuck outside the machining area.

At the completion of the machining cycle, the system automatically swaps the chucks, ensuring a seamless transition between cycles. This parallel processing capability significantly minimizes idle time and enables near-continuous machining.

Delivering Measurable Manufacturing Advantages

The integration of the automated chuck changing mechanism in the VTL 30 LM ACC delivers multiple operational benefits:

  • Substantial productivity enhancement through reduced cycle times
  • Significant reduction in non-cutting time
  • Improved spindle utilization and machine efficiency
  • Enhanced flexibility for multi-part and batch production environments

Driving the Future of Smart Manufacturing

With this patented innovation, Ace Designers reinforces its commitment to advancing smart manufacturing and delivering automation-driven solutions tailored to evolving industry needs. The VTL 30 LM ACC represents a significant step forward in enabling manufacturers to achieve higher throughput, improved efficiency, and greater operational agility.
